How Click-Through Attribution Works
Click-through attribution tracks the direct path from an ad click to a conversion event. The mechanism is straightforward: when a user taps or clicks an ad, the attribution provider records a click event with associated metadata, device identifier, timestamp, campaign ID, ad network, creative variant, and any custom parameters. This click record is stored and indexed for matching.
When the user subsequently installs the app and opens it for the first time, the MMP SDK fires an install event. The attribution engine searches its click database for a matching record from the same device within the configured attribution window. If a match is found, the install is attributed to that click's campaign. If multiple clicks from different networks match, the most recent click typically wins under last-touch attribution rules.

This makes the causal connection between the ad and the install much stronger than passive ad exposure. The relationship between click-through and view-through attribution is not adversarial, both capture real aspects of how advertising influences user behavior. The challenge is configuring them to work together without double-counting or over-crediting.
Most MMPs prioritize click-through over view-through in their attribution waterfall. If a user both viewed an ad on Network A and clicked an ad on Network B before installing, the click on Network B receives credit. This hierarchy reflects the stronger intent signal of a click. However, this means Network A's contribution to the conversion is invisible in last-touch reporting, even though the impression may have played a role in the user's decision.

Click-to-install time distribution shows how quickly users convert after clicking, this informs your attribution window configuration and helps identify fraud. A healthy distribution shows a sharp peak in the first few hours with a long, thin tail.
Click-to-first-action rate measures how many users who clicked an ad and installed the app went on to complete a meaningful action like registration, first purchase, or content engagement. This metric connects your acquisition spend to actual business outcomes rather than vanity install counts.
Assisted click analysis shows cases where a click from one network was followed by a click from another network before the install. While only the last click receives attribution credit in a last-touch model, the first click played a role in the user's journey. Understanding these assist patterns helps you value networks that drive consideration even if they do not always get the last click.
Finally, compare your click-through attributed installs against incrementality test results when possible. Incrementality testing reveals the true causal lift of your campaigns by comparing conversion rates between exposed and holdout groups. If your click-through attribution claims 1,000 installs but incrementality testing shows only 600 incremental installs, the gap represents organic users who would have installed anyway but happened to click an ad first.
